EXHIBITION 2: Beyond Suffrage: Women Making More Noise 100 Years of Women's Movements

July 2nd - 6th 2018

Exhibition Background:

Most of the placards and banners of protest are part of a collection of more than 80, used, carried (subsequently 'discarded')  in the international day of action following the inauguration of Donald Trump as US president. Up to 2 million people worldwide marched on January 21, 2017, to show solidarity with Women's March on Washington, and to advocate legislation and policies regarding human rights and other issues, including women's rights, immigration reform, healthcare reform, reproductive rights, the natural environment, LGBTQIA rights, racial equality, freedom of religion, and workers' rights. In the UK, between 80,000 and 100,000 people joined the Women’s March on London, and another 14 marches took place in towns and cities including Manchester, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Leeds and Belfast.

Members of the Deeds Not Words Towards Liberation Project, who were both participants and documentors of the March, ‘salvaged the discarded’ placards moments before they were declared ‘rubbish’ by the City of London. The banners and placards were rescued indiscriminately and reflects the Protest on January 21st 2017 in its raw form.

Elements of the exhibition 11 placards in all were loaned for exhibition at Artcore, Derby. The Artcore exhibition celebrated  Intentional Women's Day Stand Up! Exhibition March 10th - April 16th 2018. See Stand Up! Exhibition link.

The Exhibition will also include banners made for and carried in the Processions March in London June 10th 2018; The Silk Mill Turnout Festival June 23rd 2018 and a 2 part 'Tapestry' in progress commissioned by Deeds Not Words Towards Liberation Project. Elements of the Commissioned Wall Hanging (yet to be joined together) may also be on display. We hope to see you there.
